VELO 99 NEWSLETTER         No. 5.

2003 has arrived and the first Velo99 race is less than three months away. Now is the time to start putting in those serious base miles. The weather so far has not been the sort that encourages anyone to go out and ride on a regular basis. As I write this the weather is cold and damp, the mist is thickening and visibility is about 150 m. Once again my riding is going to be a session on the turbo in the garage. To get you into the mood to do some riding there is a Velo99 club run on January 12th. Come and join us, ride some miles in a new area with the bonus of pleasant company as well.

Club Runs

Sunday 12th January.  Leader:  Steve King.

Meet at Harby Village Hall (near the garage on the Bingham Road) at 10.00am. The distance will be about 50 miles with a café stop at half way. The pace will be steady, ideal for those early season miles.

Sunday 16th February.  Leader: Rod Forster.

Leave Market Rasen Market Place at 10.30am. The market place is in the centre of town on the A631. It is the cobbled area in front of the Aston Arms pub.

Tony’s Track Session

On behalf of all those who attended the session at the Velodrome I would like to thank Tony Thurman and his band of helpers for giving us such a good afternoon. All the riders I spoke to were most enthusiastic and agreed that it was an event that should be repeated. To those who decided it was not for them, all I can say is that you made a big mistake. The coaching was excellent and it was not long before everyone was riding the track with confidence.

Barton Wheelers/Velo99 Training Road Race.     Saturday 15 march 2003 at 2.00pm.

The race will be held on the popular Deepdale circuit just outside Barton on Humber via Caistor Road. The course cannot be described as “hilly” but more of a “rolling” nature and is approximately a 5km circuit.

The race will be only 6 circuits with it being early season making a total of 30km. The headquarters and changing room will be in the Methodist Hall on Holydyke, the main street in Barton. The Ladies committee will be providing refreshments.

Barton upon Humber is easily accessible via the motorway system M180 and then A15 dual carriageway towards the Humber Bridge.

Club run report – Epworth       (Kevin Denham)

The weather report was not too promising, however my friend Alistair and I set off from home looking forward to a ride away from our usual patch.

We arrived in Epworth an hour later and sat and waited expectedly in what we believed to be the right car park.

Fifteen minutes later and no one else had arrived. Doubt started setting in as to whether we were actually in the right place. At twenty past ten we decided to have a look around the town to see if there were any likely lads (or lasses) who looked like they were geared up for the club run. A quick search around the town revealed no cyclists.

Arriving back at the car park we at last found some fellow cyclists (Derek Hemingway and Roger Hampshire). The two local lads were ready to get us totally lost riding somewhere close to the River Trent.

I cannot say where we went but on a bitterly cold early December day we had a good ride of about 43 miles. Derek showed off his local knowledge taking us on some excellent roads, which were almost traffic free and reminded me of northern France. Even the road surfaces were good with smooth tarmac, free of the potholes of my usual Sunday run.

After 30 miles Derek took us to a local coffee stop, just as it felt like frostbite was setting in. After a warming cup of tea and a bacon buttie we set off for home and into the wind again.

The largest hill we climbed all day was a motorway bridge but surprisingly on such a flat run, we knew we had done the miles due to Derek’s ability to find a route with a seemingly constant headwind.

Despite the weather, we had an enjoyable ride in a new area and I would hope that the next event in January gets an increase in support to ensure that these runs become a permanent feature.

See you at Belvoir on the 12th January
